SWATCH TEAMS UP WITH SINGAPOREAN ARTIST JULIANA ONG

Hi Juliana. Can you tell us more about yourself?
My name is Yi Lin Juliana Ong and I also go by Juls. I’m a Singaporean artist and I was also a former resident at the Swatch Art Peace Hotel.

What does time mean to you?
Time is a weird thing — it means a lot and it also means nothing. I guess the concept of time alters each and every time. Sometimes it’s too fast, sometimes it’s too slow, but I guess the ideal time for me is to not realize there’s such a thing. To not realise its existence and to be there at the moment. To be present is the best, I guess, of time.

Talk to us about inspiration.
I’m learning to find inspiration in everything, but I find myself most inspired when I’m traveling on my own; on adventures; when I meet strange people. I guess my curiosity for adventures leads me to finding new inspirations.

What was your reaction to the proposal to feature your vision on the canvas of the iconic Swatch watch?
I was really happy. It was a great opportunity given to me, after already being given the chance to spend time at the Swatch Art Peace Hotel, so I was very happy.

How did you decide which design to feature?
When I was told about the project, I was doing my residency in Shanghai. I believe that the most important thing about the residency was the people I was with. I learned so much from the individuals. I also learned so much as a collective, so I thought I would like to have a drawing of faces and traces. It made sense to use that drawing.

What was your reaction when you saw the product for the first time?
I first saw the prototype when I was in Hong Kong for a Swatch event, "Swatch Loves Art", where there was an exhibition of over a hundred watches by really famous artists, people who I am inspired by. To be told that “Oh, here's the watch with your artwork on it”, I was almost speechless and didn’t think it was real then.

What message do you want to communicate to the people who buy your watch?
I guess with the idea of the drawing on the watch... the drawing had the theme to amuse one’s self by looking at the comic faces found on Chinese artifacts. I would also like to tell people to be kind, be nice, be funny and silly with the people that you meet in along your way in life because they are going to provide you stories that will allow you to learn.

The Juls at Swatch Art Peace Hotel watch retails for $103 and is available at various Swatch boutiques, including B2-079, The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands, Tel: 6224 6753
