We’ve all been there: When the going gets tough, we turn to something that helps us soldier on. For some, it might a shoulder to lean on, and for others, it’s the healing power of words. Perhaps that’s one of the biggest reasons why sayings like “Keep Calm and Carry On” and “But first, coffee” have gotten so popular these days that they appear on everything from posters and notebooks to coffee mugs and Instagram posts.
In yoga and meditation, certain sayings (aka mantras) are encouraged because they help clear the mind and re-focus energies into the present moment. But for less spiritual and active folks (you know who you are) pop culture can play a pretty important role too. Take for example the Netflix series “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”. Our heroine Kimmy has gone through a traumatic experience, but manages to overcome daily obstacles with affirmations like “Just take it ten seconds at a time. Everything will be okay” or “Be you. Be what you want. And then become unbreakable.” Now, who says TV is a mind numbing experience?
If you’re going through a rough patch and would like to empower yourself through words, here’s how to get started:
1. In a quiet spot, sit yourself comfortably and keep anything distracting away from you. Set the mood by lighting incense or essential oils if you’d like.
2. Close your eyes and imagine that you’re in a blissful and peaceful place.
3. When all is calm, open your mind and repeat a mantra you’ve chosen. It can be as simple as “I believe I can do this” to something more specific like “I trust and know that my body is a self-healing, self-regulating entity.”
4. Repeat these words and believe them as you say it. This helps activate healing powers within you, which can overcome negative energy — the source of illness and toxic emotions.
