Catalog 10 Jun 2011 07:24 AM Fri
Give it up for DJ Blink who will be spinning alongside DJ Hong at Zouk’s CODE: Black & White event tonight! As one of the KL’s top DJs and one half of “filthy electronic” group LapSap (“rubbish” in Cantonese), Blink’s hot beats will surely send the well-dressed revellers into a frenzied groove. CATALOG caught up with the Malaysian DJ to find out what’s going down.
For your upcoming CODE event, what type of music will you be playing?
It will be my first time playing in Zouk Mainroom so I am not sure what to expect but I will definitely be playing to my usual style (Big Room sound and Dutch House) and if the vibe is good, I will drop some Techno bombs that are also really close to my heart.
What track is currently topping your playlist?
Tim Mason’s The Moment (Steve Angello Edit). Who are your influences?
Boysnoize, Laidback Luke and Shinichi Osawa.
Is there anyone you would like to collaborate with?
Without a doubt, Kanye West.
How did you feel about Pete Tong praising you as being “very good”?
It was such a long time ago! Thanks for reminding me though. Tong’s a legend and for him to say that is definitely an honour and it still feels pretty damn good. HA! I have a couple of releases coming up on Mixmash (Laidback Luke’s label) & Dirty Dutch (Chuckie’s label) - let’s see what Ol’ Pete has to say about those shall we? :)
It’s stated that it took two years before you shifted from DJing progressive house to hip-hop turntablism, why the wait?
This was more than a decade ago actually, I played progressive house in the late nineties when I started DJing. I pretty much left the turntablism scene in 2004 and moved to Breakbeat for a couple of years before I started “LapSap” with X.U. It has been “four to the floor” beats from there.
Is your DJing style the same regardless of whether you are playing in Singapore or Malaysia?
I have not played in a Singapore club night per se, so to be honest I do not really know if there is going to be any differences. My style does vary from venue to venue, more so if it’s out of Asia, but tonight I will stick to my usual style of playing – keep the range open and try to tease the punters at Zouk with everything on my thumbdrive.
Where do you see yourself five years from now?
Playing (sold out) stadium shows!
