Set in the tiny, rural town of Carthage, Texas, town sweetheart Bernie Tiede befriends wealthy widow Marjorie Nugent, travels and manages her banking affairs. The bitter lady eventually becomes fully dependent on Bernie and his generosity, and the man struggles to meet her increasing demands. She goes missing for months, but no one's the wiser as Bernie continues to handle her affairs, until the townspeople find out that Marjorie has been dead for sometime. Bernie, the man beloved by the whole town is charged with the murder.
